Starting April 2018, CMS will begin mailing beneficiaries new Medicare cards that include a new Medicare number. The mailings will be staggered throughout the year, with completion expected by April 2019.
Replacing the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) on all Medicare cards helps protect: 1) Private healthcare and financial information, and 2) Federal health care benefit and service payments.
